Traditional traffic counts are collected for a few days at a single location — typically representing only about 2% of the year. That snapshot gets used to make decisions for the other 98% of the time, even though it can miss weekends, holidays, seasonal shifts, and special events entirely.
Urban SDK instead reflects a full year of data, on every road segment, continuously validated and updated.

How it's built: Urban SDK's volumes are generated from three layered inputs feeding a machine learning model:
- Permanent Counts — anchor accuracy with trusted, continuously observed volumes
- Short-Term / Temporary Counts — refine locally with targeted calibration and validation
- Continuous Probe Data — fill in the network with billions of data points from connected vehicles and devices, delivering coverage across all roads and time periods
The model is trained and validated on a state-by-state basis against each state DOT's most recent ground-truth AADT data, then continuously refined as new information comes in.

The following are Traffic Volume data layers that can be selected within Insights including:

- Volume (AADT) — Annual Average Daily Traffic: the estimated typical number of vehicles traveling through a road segment on a given day, averaged across a full year of data. This is a single annual daily value.
- Volume (AAHT) — Annual Average Hourly Traffic: the estimated typical volume on a segment for a specific combination of day-of-week and hour-of-day. This is an annual hourly value broken down by day of week, period of day, and hour of day.
NOTE: For Aggregated Insights reports where data is provided by period of day, the value represents the max hourly volume within the selected period(s). For Daily Insights reports where data is provided by hour of day, the AAHT is provided as the calculated annual hourly value. - Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT): the estimated upper and lower range of annual vehicle-miles traveled along a road segment. Calculated by multiplying the road segment length by the volume (AADT range) by 365 days. This is a single annual value. VMT is a common metric for understanding total travel demand across a network — not just volume at a single point, but how much distance is actually being driven on a segment over the course of a year.
