A summary of the Area Code Boundary specification.
1.0 Introduction
The Area Code datasets are reported once per year by the United States Census. The data reflect the area codes in the defined search region. The dataset is available to download through the Urban SDK Data Hub for the years 2015 - 2020.
Area Code Definition
An area code historically stems from a larger system, known as the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). This plan is utilized by many countries to organize telephone calls.
Area codes are most often three-digit numbers indicating the broadband area that the phone receiving the call is based in.
