Route Selection

How to select a route for analysis in Insights.

1.0 Introduction

Insights offers the ability to select an aggregated set of road segments between a start and end point. Individual road segments for the route are provided in combination with an aggregated route for analysis to compare localized and route-level operations.

2.0 Selecting a Route for Analysis

Follow these steps to analyze route-level road data comprising an aggregation of more than one road segment, starting from the initial report criteria dialogue box in Insights:

Step 1 - Set Location Criteria

  • Boundary: If you have multiple boundaries setup in your account a dropdown is available to select between them. For most accounts, only one boundary is setup and will be selected by default.
  • Disaggregation: In the Report Criteria dialogue box select "Route" as your Boundary disaggregation.  This will allow you to aggregate data across an entire route to compare route-level and segment-level operations.

Step 2 - Set Time Period Criteria

You have the option to have your data disaggregated to daily or monthly outputs depending on the level of detail desired:

  • Daily: if you would like to analyze data across a limited range of days and compare hourly data.

⚠️NOTE: Limited to a maximum of 2 days. Additional days are planned for a future release.

OR

  • Monthly: if you would like to analyze data across a specific month, broken up by day of week and period of day.

⚠️NOTE: Aggregated by period of day. Hourly is planned for a future release.

Click "Update Criteria" to proceed to designing your route.

Step 3 - Select Your Route

  • Place or Search Location Points: While designing a route, the map view will be limited to your selected boundary.  Search for an address, or simply click on the map to place a point. Only two points are needed to generate a path, but you are able to place up to 5 points to inform the design of your route. Once you are satisfied with your point placements, click "Build Route" and up to 4 shortest path route alternatives will be generated.

⚠️NOTE: For now, the number of points that can be placed to generate a route is limited to 5, with plans to increase this in future releases.

  • Review Route Options: You can turn on and off the different path options to see them better by clicking the blue layer icon to the left of each route option (see image above). Only one option can be selected for analysis by clicking on your preferred route's checkbox.

Click "Next" to set a report name and build report.

Step 4 - Set Name & Build Report

  • Set a report name to be able to build a report. There is an optional field to put a report description as well.

Click "Build Report" to submit for processing. You will get the option to stay and wait for the report to be completed (usually <10 minutes), or you can build another report for processing while you wait. In both instances, an email notification will be sent to notify you when your report is processed.
